  concrete inspection public works

SRI’s ground penetrating radar can
be used for public works projects

identify leaks in buried water pipes either by detecting underground voidsLike many technologies, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is evolving rapidly as an investigative tool due to advances in computers and software and an ever-increasing number of commercial and public works sector applications. GPR has been developed for use in the utility industry, offering a method of locating buried piping of any material, without excavation. Structural Radar Imaging has the GPR experience public works commissions
are seeking.

GPR could, in principle, identify leaks in buried water pipes either by detecting underground voids created by the leaking water as it erodes the material around the pipe, or by detecting anomalous change in the properties of the material around pipes due to water saturation.

GPR technology incorporated by SRI can be used for various public works projects. We have used our surface penetrating radar on dams in Washington, on bridge decks, at correctional facilities, airports and universities.

  • Bridge deck engineers can determine cost-effective rehabilitation using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems and software.
    • On older, existing decks, GPR produces accurate contour maps
  • Ground penetrating radar system can be used to locate metallic and nonmetallic subsurface utilities
  • Public works engineers often seek nondestructive alternatives to boring holes or excavating to find deterioration within concrete or buried pipes.
  • City engineers use ground-penetrating radar to detect problems with their  miles of streets
  • Ground penetrating radar analysis can be completed in the area surrounding sinkholes to determine if a larger problem exists
  • The Dept of Public Works uses  ground-penetrating radar to locate subsurface structures such as trenches, storage tanks and sewer pipes

If your city has a public works project and you need to find what’s hidden before you begin, contact the GPR professionals at Structural Radar Imaging.
